Thursday Theme=Toy

Thursday Theme=Toy

A toy is an object used in play. Toys are usually associated with children and pets, but it is not unusual for adult humans and some non-domesticated animals to play with toys. Many items are manufactured to serve as toys, but items produced for other purposes can also be used as toys. ...Wikipedia

What does a large cardboard box, an empty oatmeal box, a cooking pot and a wooden mixing spoon have in common? Why they are items when given to a small child will keep that child joyfully occupied for some time. Just watch a child with their innocent imagination and these items mentioned above. The oatmeal box and cooking pot become a drum when whacked with the wooden spoon . A large cardboard box becomes a house, a cave, a fort or whatever.

I remember as a young girl having Lincoln logs, Tinker toys and dolls among other things. When I was a little girl we all wanted a doll known as a Betsy Wetsy doll. She came with a bottle. After filling it with water( hopefully), you gave her a bottle she would wet her pants. I now find it perplexing why we all wanted that doll.

As we grow older the toys can become more sophisticated and expensive. For instance the person who must own all the latest technological gadgets. In my case my toys are cameras. I got my first camera when I was a young teenager. My father gave me a large black Eastman Kodak box camera. That was replaced with a Kodak Brownie Flash Camera that I still have to this day forgotten in a bottom dresser drawer. Overtime these two cameras were replaced. The film SLR and point and shoot cameras have been replaced or put aside with digital SLR and other digital cameras. I always wanted so much to draw, but I just don't have the talent. So, photography has become my art form.

But, the cameras are the least of my toys. I became a scrapbooker about six years ago. That is one expensive endeavor. Besides the photos, papers, scissors, adhesives and albums, there are so many gadgets, devices and cutting machines that can be bought. I think I have bought a substantial number of them all . Do I use most of them? No! I just like to buy them with the idea I will use them someday. Of course I have no idea when that some day will come. Matter of fact some of the items are still in their boxes. Meanwhile, I need to find a place to display / store all this stuff. So now I’m contemplating setting up a scrapbooking section in my library / computer room. The sooner I do this the better. Than I'll have no excuse not to use all the toys I have accumulated.

No matter what age we are from the time we are babies with a rattle and mobile over our crib through our adult life, most of us have some toy or toys that we enjoy and that make our lives full. What toy(s) do you have today?

A large cardboard box is the ultimate toy I think.

It is interesting to read about your photography- your pictures are lovely- and it is great to have that visual memory. I do regret not taking many photos during my life- this will maybe something i will start to do more of as part of blogging- when I can get the right equipment.

I remember wanting a baby doll which cried- I never got it though!

Boxes, pans and spoons ARE universal toys. We still bang pans on New Year's Eve. I loved my Betsy Wetsy and my 2 1/2 ft. Roberta doll.

My scrapbooking stuff is still in the bag I took it home in sitting in my bedroom closet. Someday....

I really understand about amassing crafting supplies--my toys are my many, many skeins of yarn, and knitting needles!

I can see that with my son, even if he has toys he really enjoyed playing with boxes and stuff.
Imagination that's what we need and simple things are the best too.

I agree with Cinnamon about the large cardboard box! I broke my toy (camera) a month or so ago and thought I was doing to die. My new one just came and I can't wait to get it all hooked up, so excuse me, I've gotta go play...

Betsy Wetsy, yes that was the dolls name. And it was so amazing for her to wet her pants.

I almost picked my camera as my favorite toy, but then I knew it was my laptop. But you know what I consider my real favorites, those are my kitchen gadgets. I collect them like crazy. I do not know why. I see these things "On TV" and then I just have to have it. I am trying to stop. I have no room to store them and the funny thing is that I rarely cook.

But tonight I did get out my KitchenAid mixer and made up a batch of oatmeal cookies. I cannot cook them until tomorrow because they have to be cold when you cook them. I am trying a new recipe that I made up from putting some others together. Hopefully they will be good. Yup love those kitchen gadgets. The best toys of all, next to the laptop.

You must of played with some of the same toys as a kid that I did. And a cardboard box turned into a Fort. Oh yeah!

Definitely my camera, which I'd love to upgrade. Do the stereo and cd's count as toys? I guess they would, for the pleasure they bring.

I love giving my boys boxes of various sizes and seeing hwat they will do with them. Amazing to watch and learn from them as they think "outside the box."

I remember a pile of leaves, rock & trees, and small wild creatures. Those were my favorite childhood toys

Today my toys are DVDs, dining out & wine.

I am surrounded by objects that bring joy and play....and thus one could say surrounded by toys.

I have always viewed my camera more as an extension of myself rather than a toy. now my new little netbook I view as a toy....

I say I play with fabric when I quilt so I guess my fabric stash can be considered toys...

I tend to agree things like boxes, rocks, beads, bottle caps, etc. often seem to make the best toys!

I worry because I think sometimes too many (store bought) toys for children can be detrimental....

word verification - play - i'm not kidding!!!!

Well these days my toy is the camera that I am just trying to master and the good old lap top. I do enjoy playing in the dirt so when the snow goes I will be outside digging away the hours in bliss.

Oh my gosh - Betsy Wetsy!! I had "Cheeful Tearful" when I was little.

Scrapbooking does seem to be a hobby that comes with a lot of toys. I'm not even a scrapbooker and I'm always tempted to buy them!

I like to play in the garden. In the dirt with seeds and bulbs and clippers and shovels.

anymore i prefer a new plant or tree in my garden to any toy...but i would sure like a new computer/toy to replace my current miserable junk heap.

Do children count as toys? Or implements of destruction?

I have always loved cameras, even when they had no film in them I'd take them outside and get my friends to pose.

Kids love the boxes more often than the toy inside! And Ijust bought a new set of Lincoln Logs( okay a cheap knock-off set ). I've introduced a new generation to the fun I had as a kid. And can still have :)

I used to put a load of blue bubbles and tupperware in the sink and the kids would stand on chairs and slosh in the kitchen for hours! These days, my best toy? My PC! All my friends are in it!

If you play with it, it's a toy. Hopefully you'll take many more pictures and keep playing with the scrapbooking. It's a lovely art - or should I say a fun game :-)

When I was 4 years old, my parents bought me a table and chairs and a tea set. I fell asleep in the large cardboard box that the table and chairs came in!

Anyway, these days, my toys are my camera, my computer, my books, and my new toaster/baker/broiler Cuisinart!

Yes,
simple items such as a large box, an empty cooking pot, and a wooden spoon are the best toys.
